Water Module

Centralises multiple DN15-DN500 meters via Pulse and/or RS485 Modbus using a single IoT Pro Water Module, with integrated water shutoff control capability. Ideal for monitoring water mains, sub-metering in commercial facilities, and high-consumption equipment.

Product Code: IOTPRO-WATER-MODULE

Product Overview

The IoT Pro Water Module is a smart water metering and control module designed to acquire consumption data from existing water meters and convert that data into structured, auditable water measurements for software platforms.

It is designed specifically for projects where multiple water meters must be monitored through a single edge device, even if installations where Pulse-output meters and RS485 Modbus water meters coexist on the same deployment. The module can read up to four pulse water meters concurrently, while also polling a shared RS485 Modbus daisy chain of compatible water meters, enabling a practical and standardised way to make existing water infrastructure cloud-connected without replacing field devices.

From a system architecture perspective, the module functions as a dedicated water data acquisition and control node that provides deterministic behaviour and predictable data structures suitable for:

  • Main and sub-metering visibility

  • Water consumption analysis and cost allocation

  • Leak, abnormal usage, and flow event detection

  • Multi-point and multi-site deployments where integrations must remain stable over time

  • Remote shutoff workflows, where water isolation is required through Modbus control or relay-based actuation

This module is particularly valuable where installed water meters already provide usable consumption signals, but lack remote connectivity, modern software integration, unified data collection, or centralised control capability, or in any new deployment that requires flexible, robust and standardised method of acquiring water consumption data.

Typical Installation Points

The IoT Pro Water Module is typically installed at water metering points that represent meaningful operational, cost, compliance, or loss-management value. This module is particularly suited to phased rollouts: start with the main incoming meter, then expand to tanks, boreholes, process feeds, and downstream sub-meters that drive cost, wastage, or operational disputes.

Measurement & Functional Capabilities

The IoT Pro Water Module is implemented as a multi-interface water metering and control platform capable of acquiring consumption data from mixed meter types, while maintaining a standardised IoT Pro integration model.

Water Metering Interfaces

  • Pulse inputs from existing water meters equipped with pulse output

  • RS485 Modbus communication with compatible smart or digital ultrasonic water meters

  • Concurrent mixed-meter operation, where pulse meters and Modbus meters are monitored by the same module

  • Water shutoff control via supported Modbus-controlled valves/meters or through a local digital output driving an external relay or actuator

This architecture makes the module suitable for both single-point and multi-point water monitoring, especially where legacy mechanical meters and newer digital meters must coexist in one project.

Shutoff & Control Capability

In addition to metering, the IoT Pro Water Module supports remote water isolation / shutoff workflows where the project requires active control.

Typical control approaches include:

  • Modbus-based shutoff control where supported by the connected device or actuator

  • Relay-driven shutoff control using the module’s digital output to drive an external relay, latching relay, solenoid, or valve control interface

This makes the module suitable not only for monitoring consumption, but also for projects where remote response, protection, or controlled distribution is required.

Channel Architecture

The IoT Pro Water Module is designed for single-point and multi-point water metering, supporting deployments ranging from one main incoming meter to multiple distributed meters across a site.

Typical rollout patterns:

  • Start: main incoming meter or one critical consumption point

  • Expand: tanks, boreholes, process lines, and sub-distribution branches

  • Scale: multiple downstream meters, tenant meters, hotel rooms, plant areas, or remote sites with identical integration behaviour

This architecture is especially useful where one deployment must combine:

  • 1 to 4 pulse-output water meters

  • 1 RS485 multi-drop Modbus line

  • Optional shutoff control

  • Additional physical I/O for related monitoring signals

IoT Pro Hardware Architecture

The IoT Pro Water Module is built on the IoT Pro Hardware Architecture, a modular industrial platform shared across all IoT Pro devices.

This platform defines common characteristics such as power behaviour, enclosure design, environmental protection, security principles, lifecycle management, and long-term hardware availability.

Gradient Abstract Background

Power Architecture & Energy Options

Supports operation strategies where monitoring must continue reliably across utility interruptions or control-panel power loss, helping preserve visibility of meter communications, control states, and recovery events.

Flexible Connectivity, One Integration Model

Enables the same integration behaviour across LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE Cat-1, and Wi-Fi, supporting deployments inside plant rooms, meter chambers, service corridors, utility cabinets, and remote water infrastructure where connectivity conditions vary.

Antenna & Mechanical Configuration Flexibility

Supports internal antenna operation for robustness, with external SMA and through-lid antenna options where chambers, kiosks, metal enclosures, or recessed infrastructure attenuate RF and reliable communication requires external antenna placement.

Modularity for Expansion

Supports additional I/O and application-specific integrations for projects that combine water metering with pump status, tank level, float switches, temperature monitoring, valve feedback, or auxiliary control.

System Integration Context

The IoT Pro Water Module is designed to integrate as a component within Water & Wastewater Monitoring and wider utility-monitoring deployments, where it provides the core water consumption acquisition layer used for:

  • Water consumption visibility and accountability

  • Main and sub-meter aggregation

  • Leak, abnormal usage, and night-flow analysis

  • Cost allocation across tenants, departments, equipment, or rooms

  • Remote shutoff and intervention workflows

  • Multi-site rollouts with stable integration behaviour

It enables organisations to extract significantly more value from existing or new water meters by making data remotely accessible, analysable, actionable, and controllable without forcing full meter replacement.
