Smart Energy Monitoring: A Smarter Way to Understand Energy Use

IoT Solutions Ltd. is developing smart energy monitoring technology to collect readings from compatible meters and make them available for remote monitoring.

Meters record how much energy a building uses, but gathering and comparing readings across different sites can take time. IoT Solutions Ltd. is developing a system to collect readings from compatible meters and make them available for remote monitoring.
This work forms part of IUM (Innovating Utilities Monitoring), a research and development project exploring how connected technology can make energy and water monitoring more useful to organisations.
Bringing readings together
The system is designed to work with compatible meters already in use. It collects information such as electricity use and makes it available through connected software, helping organisations view readings without having to check each meter separately.
How Smart Energy Monitoring Makes Data More Useful
The device can process readings before sharing them. It can filter information, calculate minimum, maximum and average values, and identify when readings meet a set condition.
It can also group information before sending it. This is designed to reduce unnecessary communications.

Helping technicians set up devices
An Android app helps technicians set up and check the system. It can show readings, connection information and the status of connected equipment.
Technicians can use the app to adjust settings during installation. Some changes can also be sent remotely, with confirmation when the device receives them.
Designed for real conditions
Meters and communications can sometimes stop responding. If a meter does not reply, the device records the problem rather than allowing its main programme to get stuck waiting.
The team has also reviewed how the device uses power in different operating conditions and adjusted its operation to avoid unnecessary activity.

From monitoring to better decisions
The wider IUM project aims to connect the devices with cloud software for monitoring and analysing utility data. The goal is to give organisations a clearer view of their energy and water use, helping them spot changes and decide what may need attention.
