Malta-based innovation project explores new ways to reduce battery waste, improve connectivity and support the next generation of smart monitoring technologies
IoT Pro is a Malta-developed technology platform designed to support sustainable IoT innovation through long-life monitoring devices, flexible connectivity, and real-world infrastructure monitoring. The ongoing research project explores how connected technologies can become more reliable, energy efficient, and environmentally responsible for future smart infrastructure deployments.

From monitoring water levels and environmental conditions to helping organisations manage infrastructure more efficiently, connected technologies are quietly becoming part of everyday life.
Across industries and communities, smart devices are helping organisations make better decisions, respond more quickly to problems, and gain visibility into assets and infrastructure that were previously difficult to monitor remotely.
Yet behind every connected device lies a challenge that often goes unnoticed: how to keep it powered, connected, and operational for years while minimising maintenance, waste, and environmental impact.
A research and innovation project led by IoT Solutions Ltd. is exploring new ways to address these challenges through the continued development of IoT Pro, a Malta-designed technology platform used for remote monitoring and smart infrastructure applications. Supported through the FUSION R&I Technology Development Programme LITE, the project aims to make connected devices more sustainable, more flexible, and easier to deploy across a wider range of environments.
"Too often, connected devices are designed around short product lifecycles, forcing organisations to replace hardware or re-engineer software integrations every few years. Through IoT Pro, we are taking a different approach. Our goal is to build technology that remains reliable, secure and supported for the long term, while giving customers the flexibility to adapt as connectivity technologies and operational requirements evolve." — Ing. Reuben Camilleri Director & General Manager, IoT Solutions Ltd
The Hidden Challenge Behind Smart Technology
Whether monitoring a remote water reservoir, managing parking spaces, measuring environmental conditions, or tracking critical infrastructure, many connected devices operate in locations where power and connectivity can be difficult to maintain.
Traditionally, this often means relying on batteries that require periodic replacement or designing products around a single communication technology. While effective, these limitations can increase maintenance requirements, reduce flexibility, and contribute to unnecessary electronic waste.
The research project is investigating how future IoT devices can operate for longer periods, support multiple communication networks, and offer greater flexibility in how they are powered. The goal is simple: reduce maintenance, reduce waste, and increase reliability.
What is IoT Pro?
IoT Pro is the proprietary hardware and software technology platform developed by IoT Solutions and serves as the foundation for a growing portfolio of smart monitoring and control solutions.
Built around a modular hardware architecture, IoT Pro has been designed to support long-term monitoring, sensing, and control applications where reliability, lifecycle stability, and software integration are critical. Rather than creating a completely different technology platform for every application, IoT Pro provides a common foundation that can be adapted across multiple industries and use cases.

One of the platform's defining characteristics is its ability to support multiple communication technologies, including LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE Cat-1 and Wi-Fi, while maintaining a single, consistent software integration model. This means organisations can choose the most appropriate communication method for each deployment without needing to redesign how their software systems interact with devices.
Today, IoT Pro forms the foundation of solutions used in areas such as energy monitoring, environmental sensing, water and wastewater management, parking systems, generator monitoring, marine applications, and industrial infrastructure monitoring.
Designing for the Long Term
A key focus of the project is challenging the traditional approach to connected devices.
Many electronic products are designed with relatively short lifecycles, requiring replacement when technology changes or when hardware reaches its limits. IoT Pro takes a different approach by prioritising long-term architectural stability.
Hardware revisions, firmware updates, and integration interfaces are designed to remain backward compatible wherever possible, helping organisations protect their investments and avoid costly software redevelopment as technology evolves.
The platform also incorporates modular design principles that simplify maintenance and future upgrades. Batteries can be replaced when required, communication technologies can be updated through modular components, and devices can continue evolving without requiring complete replacement.
Making Devices Last Longer
Energy efficiency is another major focus of the research.
The project is exploring how intelligent power management can significantly extend device lifespan while reducing maintenance requirements. By supporting multiple power configurations, including battery-powered operation, external power sources, and renewable energy options such as solar energy, devices can be adapted to suit a wide range of deployment environments.
IoT Pro also incorporates power diagnostics and battery protection mechanisms designed to detect abnormal energy consumption and help devices achieve their expected operational lifespan. This contributes to more reliable long-term deployments while reducing the frequency of maintenance visits and battery replacements.
Although replacing a single battery may seem insignificant, the environmental impact becomes much larger when thousands of devices are deployed across cities, industrial facilities, utilities, and environmental monitoring networks.

Better Connectivity, Wherever Devices Are Installed
Not all locations are equal when it comes to connectivity.
A device installed in a city centre may have very different connectivity requirements from one deployed in a remote reservoir, underground chamber, industrial facility, or coastal environment.
The project supports the continued evolution of IoT Pro as a multi-network platform capable of operating across different communication technologies while maintaining a consistent user experience and software integration model. This flexibility allows organisations to select the most suitable connectivity option for each deployment without increasing complexity.
By removing the need to redesign systems every time connectivity requirements change, organisations can deploy monitoring solutions more confidently and efficiently.
Supporting Sustainability Through Innovation
Sustainability is a core theme of the project.
Longer device lifespans, reduced power consumption, fewer maintenance visits, and lower dependence on battery replacements all contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of connected technology.
As the number of connected devices worldwide continues to grow, designing products that remain operational for longer and consume fewer resources will become increasingly important.
The project demonstrates how innovation can support both technological advancement and environmental responsibility at the same time.
Innovation Developed in Malta
The project highlights the role that Maltese engineering and innovation can play in addressing global technological challenges.
Since its foundation, IoT Solutions has focused on developing technology platforms that combine hardware, software, connectivity, and cloud integration into complete monitoring solutions. The continued evolution of IoT Pro reflects this long-term commitment to research, development, and innovation.
Through initiatives such as the FUSION R&I Technology Development Programme LITE, local companies are able to explore new technologies, validate new concepts, and contribute to the development of solutions that have relevance far beyond Malta's shores.

One example is IoT Pro Generator Monitoring, which enables organisations to remotely monitor generator status, fuel levels, battery health, runtime, and power events from a single cloud platform.
Looking Ahead
The future of connected technology is not simply about collecting more data.
It is about creating devices and platforms that can operate reliably for years, consume less energy, require less maintenance, and adapt to changing operational requirements without forcing organisations to replace entire systems.
The ongoing research project is helping advance the next generation of the IoT Pro platform, exploring innovations in power management, connectivity, device lifecycle management, and long-term sustainability.
By combining research-driven innovation with real-world deployment experience, IoT Solutions aims to create technology that delivers lasting value while reducing environmental impact.
As connected infrastructure becomes increasingly important across industries worldwide, projects such as this demonstrate how engineering and innovation developed in Malta can contribute to building more sustainable, resilient, and future-ready technology ecosystems.
"The future of connected technology is not simply about collecting more data. It is about creating devices that operate reliably for years, consume less energy, and deliver lasting value."
