MALTA – IoT Solutions Ltd., Malta’s leader in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, has announced the development of an advanced utility metering and analytics platform designed to help Maltese and European companies automatically track and report their Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - a critical step toward compliance with the upcoming EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) taking effect in 2026.
Under this new EU directive, companies with more than 50 employees will be legally required to measure and report their carbon footprint alongside financial performance, making environmental transparency an integral part of business reporting.
Next-Generation Smart Metering: Empowering Maltese Businesses to Lead in Sustainability
“Most companies still depend on manual readings and fragmented spreadsheets to monitor their energy and water consumption,” explained Reuben Camilleri, Managing Director of IoT Solutions Ltd. “Our mission is to automate this process entirely - giving businesses real-time visibility into their energy use, eliminating human error, helping them take control of their carbon footprint, and better managing their operations.”
The new Next-Generation Smart Metering solution, currently under development, combines custom-built hardware with AI-powered analytics hosted on IoT Solutions’ proprietary cloud platform. Each modular meter can be powered either by battery or a fixed power source and is equipped with Cellular connectivity, ensuring reliable communication even in remote or underground locations.
Data from the meters will be transmitted securely to the cloud, where advanced algorithms and Big Data analytics will identify consumption patterns, detect inefficiencies, and calculate associated carbon emissions. This empowers organisations to reduce waste, save costs, get key insights about their operational trends and inefficiencies, and meet their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting obligations seamlessly.
Practical Benefits for Maltese Enterprises
The technology offers immediate benefits to Maltese organisations preparing for ESG and sustainability reporting, such as:
Automated carbon reporting in line with EU directives
Real-time visibility of energy and water usage across multiple sites
Utility bill validation and identification of hidden wastage
Reduced operational costs through targeted energy efficiency and operational efficiency
Enhanced sustainability credentials for clients, investors, and regulators
For example, within the M. Demajo Group - IoT Solutions’ parent company - energy consumption data is currently gathered manually across several facilities in Malta and abroad. Once this project is completed, a facility manager will be able to generate complete Scope 2 reports in just a few clicks, reducing time, costs, and errors.

A Maltese Innovation with Global Potential
According to Mordor Intelligence, the global smart metering market is set to grow from USD 17.46 billion in 2024 to USD 31.82 billion by 2029, highlighting enormous export potential for IoT Solutions’ technology.
This project also strengthens Malta’s position as a hub for AI-driven sustainability innovation. It aligns with national strategies including the MDIA AI Strategy, National R&I Strategic Plan, and Smart Specialisation Strategy, all of which emphasize sustainable digital transformation.

Driving National Sustainability and Competitiveness
“This project is not just about technology,” continued Mr. Camilleri. “It’s about enabling Malta’s private sector - from manufacturing and hospitality to logistics and construction - to become more competitive, transparent, and environmentally responsible. We’re building a solution that can help companies cut consumption, reduce costs, improve operations, and take measurable action toward net-zero emissions.”
Beyond regulatory compliance, the system can also support energy audits, cost-reduction programs, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, while contributing to national sustainability goals by reducing demand on the local electricity grid.
